There Will Be No More Sea

I love the beach. I love the waves. I love swimming in warm water and feeling it crash over me and push me toward the shore. Something about a big ocean, waves rolling in, just reminds me of how powerful God is.

So this verse stopped me in my tracks.

"Now I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away. Also, there was no more sea." — Revelation 21:1

No more sea. But I love the sea. Why would God take that away?

Turns out, there is a really good reason.

Back to the beginning

Go back to Genesis, chapters 1 and 2. God makes the earth. He makes rivers. He does not make a sea.

The sea shows up later. After the flood. All that extra water had nowhere to go, so it stayed and formed the sea.

And the sea did not just hold water. It separated people. It kept nations apart. It kept us apart.

No more separation

In the new heaven and new earth, God is not just fixing things up. He is restoring the earth back to His original plan.

No more sea means no more separation. No more distance between us and each other. No more distance between us and Him.

Something better is coming

I will miss the beach. I really will. But if God is taking the sea away, it is because He already has something better planned.

He is not patching up the old earth. He is making all things new. Restored exactly how He always wanted it to be.
